iPod + lightning = OUCH!

I own an iPod, but I never run with headphones. I think it's too dangerous - I want t hear approaching bikes or cars or dogs. Seems the greatest danger to an iPod wearing running may be lightning!

According to this article on CNN.com, a runner suffered burns, ruptured ear drums, and a broken jaw when a lightning strike traveled through the device's wires.

Even crazier is the fact that is isn't the first time this has happened! You're better off leaving the gizmos at home.

If you read the CNN article closely, it states the lightning would have struck that person regardless of them wearing an iPod. In addition, ear drum ruptures are very common among lightning strike victims (read the article). There's really no proof that wearing an iPod is any different than wearing sunglasses, necklaces, or other items that contain metal\wire. The only possible threat is that an iPod can possibly create more damage because of its electrical current. It doesn't attract lightning.

I wear an iPod and can hear sirens, bikes, runners, and everything else around me just fine. It comes down to common sense. Use common sense when you wear your iPod.
